The assignment tool acts both as an assignment creator and a digital drop box that can be used to collect standard assessments like papers, project materials and homework, as well as digital files. All submitted materials live in the Grade Center, are organized by assessment/submission and user, and can be downloaded individually or all at once. When you create assignments you can include a description, point value, and file attachments. You can deliver assignments to each student individually or as collaborative work for groups of students.
When you create an assignment, a grade column is created automatically in the Grade Center. Depending on your grading style, you can access and grade one assignment attempt, view all the submissions for one assignment, or view all the assignments with submissions that need grading. When reviewing assignment submissions, you can provide a grade and feedback on the grade assignment page which is accessed from the needs grading page or the grade center.

What is Safe Assign and Safe Assignments?
SafeAssignments are a close cousin to Blackboard assignments. Any text files submitted through the SafeAssign tool will be checked for plagiarism against a variety (Internet sources, ProQuest ABI/Inform Database, BSU SafeAssign document archives, SafeAssign Global Reference Database) of source materials. As of December 2014, Safe Assignments are an option within the Assignment tool, and you do not have to make them as a separate artifact as you had to previously.
After students submit their documents through a SafeAssignment, SafeAssign checks their text for matching against the following sources:
If you have marked this SafeAssignment as “draft,” it will not be added to Ball State’s repository of document archives. Students also must check a box when submitting their assignment for their paper to be added to the SafeAssign Global Reference Database. SafeAssign can be used as a learning tool when you allow your students to see their Originality Reports. Students will see exactly the same things you see in the reports.
