About

The Indiana University School of Medicine – Muncie (IUSM-Muncie) on the campus of Ball State University (BSU) is an academic unit within both the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Ball State. At the IUSM-Muncie we report to the Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and within Ball State we report to the Provost.

Mission

The mission of the Indiana University School of Medicine - Muncie at Ball State University (IUSM-Muncie) is to provide excellent education to first and second-year students within the Indiana University School of Medicine, and to serve the local and national medical community through research and education. To achieve this mission, the faculty of IUSM-Muncie have established specific standards in the following areas, Teaching, Research, and Service during the five year period from 2000 to 2005.

Facility

During the spring of 2000, the IUSM-Muncie moved into the newly-constructed Edmund F. Ball Medical Education Building. This research and teaching facility houses both the IUSM-Muncie and the Ball Memorial Hospital Family Practice residency program. The location offers a unique geography within the statewide medical education system where IUSM-Muncie, Ball Memorial Hospital, and BSU are contiguous. This arrangement permits not only personal contact between medical students and "real world" practitioners, but also allows students to be a part of the academic environment and facilities of BSU.

The second floor of the Edmund F. Ball Medical Education Building houses classrooms, laboratories, a library and administrative offices for the IUSM-Muncie. The basement of the new facility includes a state-of-the-art Gross Anatomy lab for use by first year students. Student lounge areas provide secure access to kitchen facilities, cable TV, study carrels, and wireless internet access. Students also have access to a library within the IUSM-Muncie along with access to Ball Memorial Hospital's library, Ball State University's library, and proxy access to the Ruth Lilly Medical Center Library in Indianapolis. The facility also includes a new computer lab with 26 workstations, and a student lab for use in the Histology, Microbiology, and Immunology courses.
