The Plastics Industry

According to the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), plastics is a $310 billion per-year industry, making it one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States.

You may also be surprised to learn that about 2 percent of the U.S. workforce is involved with plastics industry. The plastics industry directly employs more than 1.4 million people and another 772,000 people are employed by related businesses that supply the plastics industry.

Plastics play a vital role in a wide variety of markets, including:

  • packaging and building/construction to transportation
  • consumer and institutional products
  • furniture and furnishings
  • electrical/electronic components
  • adhesives, inks, and coatings

The plastics industry in Indiana employs approximately 70,000 people and ships plastics products worth about $13.3 billion all around the globe. In 2002, Indiana was ranked seventh in the country in plastics employment and plastics shipments.
