Archaeologist Job Announcement

Position Function:
The Archaeologist is responsible for supervising Cultural Resource Management (CRM) projects (Phase I a, especially), writing CRM reports, planning and directing fieldwork at all phases, assisting in management of grant research projects, and training and working with students. Preference will be given to applicants who can expand the capabilities of AAL.
This is a full-time salaried position with benefits. The term of contract is 1 year with potential for renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. The Archaeologist is responsible for generating revenue to fund their own position. This is not an academic appointment.
Additional duties may include: writing grant proposals, marketing AAL to potential clients, office management tasks, and accounting.
Title and compensation dependent upon qualifications.
Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Act as a liaison with private contractors and government agencies to develop contract and other funding opportunities for AAL, address procedural questions from these entries.

2. Prepare and evaluate contract proposals and estimates for potential clients; develop projects budgets and formally submit bids to potential clients for projects to be completed by AAL.

3. Maintain a timely schedule for completing all projects; with the assistance of other Archaeologists and Research Fellows, develop procedures and schedules for the most efficient completion of contract projects; assure that all project reports include all state and federal required information.

4. Monitor, maintain, review, and balance budgets for contract projects.

5. Plan and implement cultural resource management contract projects, including records checks, field reconnaissance, and subsurface testing, mitigation, and data recovery.

6. Write reports detailing assigned projects which are acceptable to the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.

7. Conduct laboratory analysis and curation of artifacts and other project materials.

8. In cooperation with other Archaeologists and Research Fellows, maintain supplies and equipment needed to complete projects.

9. In cooperation with other Archaeologists and Research Fellows, hire, train, supervise, and review the work of student employees, interns and volunteers.

10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

11. Work with other Archaeologists and Research Fellows in the development and administration of grant projects.

12. Conduct all phases of archaeological survey and excavation for grants.

13. Prepare travel documents for student involved in archaeological survey/excavation.

14. Coordinates project opportunities with community representatives and others

15. Works with Contracts and Grants office to develop contracts and uses business skills to negotiate new approaches to contracting, accounting, and budgeting as made necessary by the designation of the AAL as a Knowledge Unit in the spring of 2010.

16. Develops and maintains accounting procedures to track time and budgets for individual projects.

17. Develops and maintains accounting procedures for the AAL as a whole.

18. Maintain supplies and equipment needed to complete projects.

19. Hire, train, assign, supervise, and review the work of student employees, interns, and volunteers.

20. Assist in managing the Applied Archaeology Laboratories website.

21. Assist in managing and moderating the Applied Archaeology Laboratories Facebook page.

Minimum Qualification:
Education: Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related field.
Experience: At least two years of full-time CRM experience or equivalent; meet the Secretary of the Interior’s criteria stated in the “Archaeology and Historic Preservation: Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines,” Federal Register, Vol. 48, No. 190-September 29, 1983, Pt. IV; Midwestern archaeology experience.
Other: Be committed to engaging students through hands-on educational experiences; be available to work flexible hours (i.e., weekends, extended days) as needed; familiarity with budgeting and coordinating archaeological projects, including development of estimates, coordination of field and laboratory personnel and billing.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Course work in related fields such as historic preservation, geology, soil science, history, natural resources, and/or geography
Experience: Ability to offer additional contract services not currently offered by AAL; demonstration of qualification under State of Indiana criteria as Historic Archaeologist; proficiency in paleobotanical analysis; geophysical (gradiometry, resistivity, ground-penetrating radar) experience; experience designing relational databases; experience at the PI level in a CRM context; experience writing technical reports; history of successful grant writing; history of peer-reviewed publication; two or more years of archaeological experience in Indiana.
