Beginning in fall 2016, the School of Art welcomes to its faculty Ball State alumnus Jim Davis, the creator of “Garfield.” As Artist-in-Residence, Jim will deliver public lectures and master classes at Ball State on topics ranging from “The Business of Garfield” to “Storytelling and the Sequential Narrative.” Garfield was first published in 1978 and is published in over 2,500 newspapers worldwide; it holds the Guinness World Record for the most widely syndicated comic strip in history. In addition to 13 primetime cartoon specials Garfield and Friends aired from 1988 to 1994, followed the The Garfield Show, five feature length films, a wide range of video games, a comic book which debuted in 2012, and most recently an art book by Hermes Press, The Art of Jim Davis’ Garfield, which was released in time for the 2016 San Diego ComicCon. In merchandizing alone, Garfield products earn between $750 million and $1 billion annually.
