Mary Carter earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction from Indiana University with a specialization in Art Education and a minor in Art History. She has been a teacher for over twenty-five years and, for ten years prior to that, a graphic designer. Before earning her doctoral degree, she taught for three years as an elementary art teacher and nine years as an adjunct professor teaching a variety of foundations, drawing, and graphic design courses. She has been the coordinator for the Saturday Children’s Art Classes for the last twelve years of its decades long tenure in this School of Art.
Carter’s early research dealt with the philosophical foundations and rationales of contemporary art education, arguing for an alternative based on the social and cultural roles of images and image-making. As an evolution of that work, she is now focusing on the contributions art education can offer to the wider community outside the public schools, particularly for the elderly and other adult populations. In collaboration with a local retirement and rehabilitation facility, she is working on a curriculum that could be easily utilized by professionals and staff as a contribution to their goals for the residents and clients.
In addition to her work in art education, she is also a graduate student in Creative Writing with the Department of English at Ball State.
