How to Apply to the School of Art

The School of Art offers graduate study leading to the following degrees:

  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Animation and Glass
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Visual Arts Studio (i.e., Ceramics, Drawing, Metals, Painting, Photography and Intermedia Arts, Printmaking, and/or Sculpture)

Applicants for the MFA or MA degree programs in art at Ball State must first be accepted to Ball State’s Graduate School and then be formally admitted by the School of Art. After you have been admitted to Ball State’s Graduate School then you may apply to the School of Art. This means if you are interested in graduate study in art at Ball State, first, you will need to:

• Follow the application instructions for Ball State’s Graduate School
• International Students should begin with International Admissions

After you have completed your application to Ball State’s Graduate School, then follow the application instructions for the appropriate degree you desire in the School of Art. See how to apply for an MFA or an MA below.

To Apply for the MFA Program
Applications must be complete by March 31 (or first business day after).
Assitantship Deadline:
If you are interested in an assistantship, your application must be completed by January 2 (or the first business day after). Prospective students must be accepted to Ball State’s Graduate School, hold a bachelor's degree in Art from an accredited college or university with at least a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale or have a 3.0 GPA in the last two years of study, and provide the following items to the School of Art:

  • Letter expressing goals in pursuing the degree.
    • If you are a new applicant and wish to be considered for an assistantship, be sure to indicate this on the Graduate School application and in your letter to the School of Art; there is no separate assistantship application for new applicants.
      • Decisions about assistantships will generally be made in March and announced in April.
  • Digital portfolio of artwork (links to websites are acceptable)
  • Current resume
  • Transcripts for all college-level course work
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Supportive material such as research and publications
