Course Description
AFA 211 - Painting 1 Introduction to painting: study of basic considerations of image making with oil paint. Focuses on media, techniques, design elements, and concepts. Prerequisite: ADS 102; AFA 202.
AFA 217 - Watercolor 1Introduction to materials and techniques of transparent watercolor as they apply to the solution of painting problems. Prerequisite: ADS 102; AFA 202.
AFA 312 - Painting 2: Figure PaintingExploration of descriptive, expressive, and interpretive methods of painting the human figure in oils using a variety of techniques and approaches from both contemporary and historical sources. Prerequisite: AFA 211. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 313 - Painting 3: Concepts and ContextStudio exercises, problems and critiques emphasizing continued mastery of skills in oil paint in relation to concepts, artists, and techniques of historical and contemporary painting. Prerequisite: AFA 312. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 314 - Painting 4: Painting MediaStudio exercises, problems and critiques emphasizing acrylic and alkyd mediums and their characteristics. Continued development of technical skills, advanced color considerations, and the solution of pictorial problems with new emphasis on individual creative solutions. Prerequisite: AFA 312. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 315 - Painting 5: Studio PracticeApplication of technical painting skills to the development of individual conceptual goals as part of the practice of a professional artist. Prerequisite: AFA 312. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 317 - EncausticsStudio exercises, problems and critiques in relation to the ancient medium of encaustic (hot wax) painting. Develop technical skills with an emphasis on contemporary individual creative solutions. Prerequisite: AFA 211. A total of 6 hours of credit may be earned, but no more than 3 in any one semester or term. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 318 - Advanced WatercolorContinued exploration of painting problems in watercolor with emphasis on traditional approaches to watercolor and the unique character of the medium. Prerequisite: AFA 217. A total of 6 hours of credit may be earned, but no more than 3 in any one semester or term. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 319 - WatermediaExploration of conceptual and physical properties unique to water-based media. Emphasis on developing a personal direction through subjects and themes. Prerequisite: AFA 217. A total of 6 hours of credit may be earned, but no more than 3 in any one semester or term. Open only to art majors and minors.
AFA 416 - Painting 6: Advanced Studio PracticeIndividualized advanced level problems in painting, continuing the emphasis on personal conceptual goals. Prerequisite: completion of 18 hours in painting. Open only to art majors.
AFA 489 - Senior Project in PaintingSynthesis and culmination of undergraduate studio experiences in painting, with a student exhibition and supporting written composition as the concluding effort. Prerequisite: AFA 416, 18 credit hours in painting; sponsorship by an art faculty member; permission of the department chairperson.
AFA 511 - Advanced PaintingAdvanced painting, stressing continued individual growth in technical proficiency and personal creative and conceptual progress with each successive course. A total of 9 hours of credit may be earned.
