Lisa M. Dunaway is an instructor in the Department of Urban Planning specializing in ecological planning, urban habitats, sustainable development, design communication media, and physical planning. Professor Dunaway presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Indiana Chapter of the American Planning Association on Ecological & Economic Sustainability. Melissa Begley, Assistant Director of Planning for the City of Columbus, Indiana, was a co-presenter. The session taught basic ecological principles necessary for long-term ecological and economic sustainability. Attendees learned how to make better planning decisions to protect biodiversity from the small, backyard scale to the large, regional scale. They were also given ideas how to incorporate the principles presented into their ordinances and other municipal planning documents. The goal of the session was to tie ecological principles to the built environment in a way that is both environmentally and economically sustainable.
