Applicant Portfolios

Even though a portfolio is not required for admission, it is highly recommended. The College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) is a very competitive program, and you’ll want to be certain the admission committee fully understands your potential to succeed within CAP.

A portfolio shows off your work, achievements, talents, and interests. The best portfolios include diverse content, and devote more attention to creative talents than technical abilities. Here are some of the items you should consider including:

  • creative work, including sketching, drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, crafts, gardening, poetry, newspaper articles, or other creative projects
  • personal or academic work
  • writing samples
  • awards or certificates

Submitted portfolios must follow these requirements (CAP reserves the right to refuse any portfolio that does not meet these requirements):

  • Portfolios will be submitted as an Adobe PDF file no larger than 20 MB.  The portfolio must be formatted and directed in portrait (vertical) orientation on an 8.5” x 11” paper size.
  • The portfolio must be in a single PDF file.
  • Please make sure your page count does not exceed 24.
  • Make sure to save your file as your first and last name. Also include your first and last name on every page of your portfolio.
  • Your portfolio is your first CAP design challenge. We suggest that you include a cover sheet and to organize all the images, text and pages in such a way that it shows off your creative work.
  • One last thing—submit your portfolio online at the same time you submit your Ball State application

How to submit: The portfolio, including letters of recommendation, can be uploaded in PDF format, as long as your file size is 10 MB or less. If your file is between 10 MB and 20 MB, the file can be e-mailed to Judy Wand.  If your file size slightly exceeds 20 MB or if you would prefer to send in your portfolio in at a later date, the file must be sent via postal mail to the College of Architecture and Planning, Ball State University, 2000 West University Avenue, Muncie, IN 47306 (attn: Undergraduate Admissions).
