First Year Studio Tracks
Three different tracks address the differing needs of first-year students and allow for the most efficient allocation of space in the various courses. By the end of the first year, all students are ready to enter the discipline of their choosing, and all three tracks feature the same instruction—just a different path.
Fall Studio Track
Students in this track begin their studies in the fall semester and may complete all required First-Year Program courses during the fall and spring semesters.
Spring Studio Track
In this track, students spend the fall semester meeting University Core Curriculum requirements and wait until the spring semester to begin the required design and design communications studio course sequences. This option allows a semester to adjust to college life before beginning the rigorous studio courses and gives students the chance to complete more of their University Core Curriculum courses in the first year. It does, however, require students to continue through the summer semester in order to complete the course sequences.
About a quarter of the positions in this track are left open until the end of the fall semester. That allows students who missed the application deadline or who were initially declined admission to the college, a second chance to apply and dive into the First-Year Program. Decisions on these reapplications are made once fall semester grades are posted.
Accelerated Studio Track
Ball State or transfer students who have already completed 48 hours of college study may apply for this special track. This is an intensive program in the summer that compresses the first-year professional course work into two five-week terms offered during the summer. CAP follows a summer semester schedule that is somewhat different from the university’s schedule.
Following are specific details about the course work required in each track, and look in the course catalog for even more specifics:
