Dan has been practicing architecture since 1965, a licensed Architect since 1971 and Professor of Architecture at Ball State University since 1972. He spent four prior years teaching at the University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, and ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich, Switzerland. He has practiced full-time with two architectural firms in New Orleans and two firms in Knoxville, Tennessee, and later maintained a part-time practice in Muncie, Indiana, as a partner and as a sole-proprietor for about 30 years doing commercial and institutional work. In recent years, his practice has been full-time summer work at a large architectural firm in southern Indiana working mostly on large scale hospital and civic projects.
At Ball State, Dan has taught design studios, professional practice, building technology, architectural history, drawing, and various topical seminars. For the past 33 years, he has taught green design and pattern language design in his studios, and is now teaching his second generation of students: the children of previous CAP graduates! He developed the 2nd year Canada Field Study Program in 1972, which continues today.
Dan has been the Architectural Internship Director at the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) for over 30 years, and developed and continues to run the Architecture Job Fair for CAP students. Dan is also the Internship Development Program Education Coordinator for Ball State.
Dan has served on many University committees including: Vice-Chairman of University Senate, Chairman of the Ball State Creative Teaching Committee, University Salary Committee, UEPC and the University Promotion & Tenure Committee. He has been a member of the CAP Alumni Governing Board for a number of years, including the present time. He is currently serving on the Department of Architecture Salary Committee.
Dan received the Sappenfield Award for Teaching Excellence from CAP in 2002, the second year it was awarded. Sigma Phi Epsilon named him a Professor of The Year for 2007-08.
Dan was four times nominated for Faculty-Staff Homecoming King, and was a top-10 finalist the last two years. He continues to serve as a Judge for the annual Ball State Homecoming Parade. Dan is the Faculty Advisor to the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta from the chapter chartering to the present time, and previously served as the chapter’s Purple Legionnaire.
Dan continues to be an enthusiastic mentor and friend to his current and previous students and colleagues.
