Malcom Cairns is a Professor of Landscape Architecture at Ball State University. His teaching experience includes eight years at the University of Illinois, and twenty-seven years at Ball State University, where he is past chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture. His research interests are focused on the documentation and evaluation of historic designed landscapes with particular interest in historic parks, park systems, and designed residential communities of the Midwest. Cairns received his BLA from Ohio State University and his MLA from Iowa State University.

A registered landscape architect, Cairns has professional practice experience in several states. An author, Cairns’ publications include a book, The Landscape Architecture Heritage of Illinois, several articles about George Kessler’s designs for the Parks and Boulevards of Indiana cities and the Frederick Law Olmsted design for Riverside, Illinois. He has developed Historic Landscape Preservations Plans for historic parks in South Bend, Indiana, Dayton, Ohio, and Muncie, Indiana. Malcolm has also contributed a chapter in the National Council of State Garden Club’s book: Stewards of the Land: A survey of Landscape Architecture and Design in America, prepared a national register nomination for a George Kessler designed park in South Bend, and is currently preparing a Cultural Landscape Report for Douglass Park in Indianapolis. Cairns is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a past president of ASLA Indiana Chapter, as well as a past chair of the Indiana Board of Registration for Architects and Landscape Architects. He also serves as Indiana Liaison to the Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS).
