Course registration is handled through the School of Extended Education and requires that you have a Ball State username and password. Newly admitted students should receive a temporary username and password from the School of Extended Education when admitted. Course registration is available online. Contact the master of urban design (MUD) program advisor for the course schedule.
All students must have a laptop computer. While either Windows or MacOS systems are acceptable, MacOS computers must be able to dual boot into Windows, as some applications are only supported on Windows. Students should review the computer recommendations from the Department of Architecture for hardware suggestions. Core software applications include Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and Google Sketchup. Ball State offers substantial discounts on both Windows and Mac operating systems as well as Office and Adobe products, while Google Sketchup is available online for free. Students are provided with a student copy of ArcGIS.
Students are encouraged to experience urban living firsthand by living downtown or in one of the many vibrant adjacent neighborhoods. In addition to living the urban lifestyle, students can also save on parking by living within walking or biking distance, or using public transportation, as the Indianapolis Center does not have student parking facilities. Indianapolis Downtown Inc. maintains a listing of rental housing available in the downtown area. Students can contact the MUD program advisor for assistance in evaluating housing options. Most housing in the downtown area is in the Massachusetts Avenue area and along the downtown Canalwalk, although you can find apartments in the heart of the busy Wholesale District or in nearby historic neighborhoods such as the Old Northside or Fountain Square.
