Welcome! We are delighted you are considering pursuing a study of urban planning at Ball State University. Whether you are seeking your first
or second professional degree
in urban planning
, I am confident you will find Ball State of interest to you. We have the only accredited
urban planning programs in the state of Indiana, and we take a unique approach to planning education.
We offer a hands-on practice-based studio model of planning education that is tied to our Community-Based Programs (CBP)
. Students in both our undergraduate and graduate programs are given the opportunity to put the skills they learn in the classroom to address real community problems.
At Ball State’s Department of Urban Planning, our mission is to provide leadership in the design and building of regenerative communities, and we adopt a holistic approach
to planning education with the view that social, economic, environmental, and global forces impact the physical shape of communities. Our focus is to provide students with the skills that will enable them to help shape the physical development of communities, both large and small.
Our graduates also gain skills to work
in the private sector, whether this is in helping developers evaluate and determine location preferences for different types of land uses or working with transportation firms in identifying best routes in the delivery of business orders or assisting financial institutions in gauging the feasibility of different development projects.
In both the undergraduate and graduate programs, we incorporate shared programs with the Departments of Architecture
and Landscape Architecture
into the curriculum. We also offer a number of immersive learning study abroad
opportunities in Europe, Asia, and South America. While our department is located in Muncie, our Indianapolis Center
provides students with opportunities for learning in the context of a large metropolitan area.
Our faculty members
have extensive practice experience, and most continue to actively engage in planning practice outside the classroom. Moreover, although we are engaged in research
and scholarly activity, we are all here because we are dedicated to grooming the next generation of planners, so our first priority is teaching. You will find our department to be a friendly and welcoming community to pursue your planning education.
