Robert A. Kvam joined the Ball State faculty in July 1997 as Director of the School of Music following a national search. Kvam came to Muncie from a similar post as Director of the School of Music at Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, Ill., where he had taught since 1986. He became Interim Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Ball State University in 1999, and was made Dean the following year after a national search.

He has been in administration for nearly 30 years, having served on the faculties of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.; The Army-Navy Band School, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash., prior to Illinois Wesleyan.

An active choral conductor and adjudicator, Kvam has regularly conducted a variety of community and academic ensembles. He has appeared as guest conductor of the New York All-State Chorus at Ithaca College, the Festival Choir at Ohio Weslyan University, Delaware, Ohio, and North Central High School in Indianapolis. He served as the Artistic Director of MasterWorks Chorale for many years and recently served as the musical director for the Department of Theatre and Dance's My Fair Lady (2009) and The Drowsy Chaparone (2012), the latter of which is co-directed by two-time Tony award winning actress Sutton Foster.

Kvam studied choral conducting with Robert Fountain at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a Master of Music degree in conducting with a voice emphasis. He further studied choral conducting with Elmer Thomas, John Leman, and Earl Rivers at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, where he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting with a voice cognate.

Kvam is a member of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, the Golden Key Honor Society, the American Choral Directors Association, College Music Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He also served on the Commission of Accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music.
