In 1977, the sociology, social work, and criminal justice programs, which had been a combined, single department, had each grown significantly enough that they warranted the development of their own respective departments. Thus, the Department of Criminal Justice and Corrections was formed. The department was later named The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology.

Since that time, the department has grown both in size and capabilities. Now ranking as one of the to 20 largest criminal justice programs in the United States, the Ball State University Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology offers two undergraduate majors, a master’s degree, certificate programs, and two minors.
