Major in Interpersonal Communication

Communicating one-on-one, person-to-person. For some, it seems to come naturally; for others, it’s painfully difficult. There’s a lot to be learned about how this kind of communication works, and that’s what an emphasis in interpersonal communication provides.

You’ll study what makes communication effective in personal relationships as well as small groups and explore such topics as relationship development, nonverbal communication, and conflict resolution.

This option includes the 21 credit hours of core courses required of all communication studies majors and adds 30 hours of course work specific to interpersonal communication. Topics include group decision making, nonverbal communication, the theories that pertain to face-to-face communication, and how to resolve conflict in constructive ways. Students take additional communication course work, along with 6 hours of course work chosen from a menu of offerings from departments such as psychological science, family and consumer sciences, and counseling psychology.
