Major in Public Communication

How does a great speaker really connect with an audience? What are the principles that allow public communication to have an impact? That’s what an emphasis in public communication explores. You’ll learn all about persuasion theory, how campaign communication works, and how best to use language to your advantage in public communication.

In addition to the 21 credit hours of core courses required of all communication studies majors, you would take at least 27 credit hours of course work specific to this area. This includes a look at the role speechmaking has played in American democracy, how persuasion affects popular culture, the foundation of rhetorical theory, and the nature of political communication. Students may choose additional communication course work and must take at least 6 hours of course work from a selection of classes in other departments, including English, political science, history, philosophy, and sociology.
