This summer program objective is to assist high school Family and Consumer Sciences teachers who have interest in teaching a high school interior design course or would like to update their knowledge of interior design. Each workshop is limited to 20 teachers. We encourage you to apply early to ensure a place in the workshop.

The workshop will consist of 7 hours of face-to-face training followed by access to a multitude of classroom resources and discussion opportunities with fellow FCS teachers through the online database BlackBoard. There are three workshop dates offered this summer of which you will indicate your preference in the application:

  • Thursday, July 28th from 10am-5pm at the Ball State Campus, Applied Technology Building in Muncie, IN

During this workshop, teachers will learn the latest information on the profession of interior design and the different career options for their students. There will also be an overview of the technology programs and software that are taught at the college level and used in the field today. Teachers will gain knowledge on selecting an accredited college, the different professional interior design associations, and the exam for professional certification (NCIDQ). Ball State students’ and professional firms’ projects will be shared as examples along with project ideas for the high school level. Textbooks and resources for the classroom will also be reviewed.

Following the workshop, teachers will have access to a BlackBoard site including resources such as possible textbooks, PowerPoints, online articles and magazines, YouTube videos, discussion boards, and other materials to assist in the development of an interior design course. Through this site, teachers can communicate with Ball State interior design professors and other FCS high school teachers on classroom ideas.

Application Deadline: The Teachers’ Design Forum is only $60 and lunch will be provided. The last day to register (submit application and check) is July 1st. Envelopes must be postmarked by that date. If you register before April 25th, the cost is only $50. Instructions for mailing are included in the application form.
