Welcome to the College of Sciences and Humanities!
At Ball State, the College of Sciences and Humanities is the heart of liberal arts education and the university's largest college. We recognize that while technical skills may become obsolete over time, skills and knowledge gained through liberal arts course work and community engagement will not.
With 20 departments spanning the humanities; the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences; and the social sciences, the college delivers the vast majority of courses that form the university core curriculum required for all Ball State undergraduates.
This curriculum focuses on the essential elements of higher learning: critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, effective written and oral communication, and the cultural, political, and historical context of the world—skills and ideas required of almost every profession. Students develop habits of mind and action that will serve them well throughout their lives.
We prize active learning pedagogies that involve our students in the theory and practice of each major and minor. In our laboratories, workshops, and field experiences, we encourage students to be creative problem solvers, to test ideas using the latest technologies, under our watchful eyes. Internships, independent research and study projects, and international travel play significant roles in our curricula.
In all, our goal is to prepare our students to succeed and to join our current alumni as important contributors to the rapidly changing world of the twenty-first century.
