You can pay your application fees (nonrefundable) with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Or you may pay online with an electronic check from a U.S. bank.

  • applications for degree and nondegree programs: $60 per program
  • applications for certificates and licensures: $20 per certificate or licensure

Reduced rates for additional applications: Each additional degree application costs $20 and certificate $10. Please remember you must use the username and password from your initial application to receive the discounted rate for multiple applications.


The Graduate School must receive all of your application materials no later than one week before the beginning of the academic term you wish to start.

However, your desired program might have different deadlines. Check with the program director for those dates.

Submit Your Transcripts

Ball State must receive your official transcript before the university can process your application. Request transcripts from all colleges and universities you attended (this includes dual credit courses earned while in high school). You do not need to submit Ball State transcripts. 

The university or college that issued your degree must send an official copy of your transcript directly to Ball State. You can often request your transcripts through an institution’s website. Also, official transcripts must include a college seal, date, and appropriate signature. All transcripts become Ball State property.

Criteria for Selection

The Department of Educational Leadership considers primarily the following criteria in determining its recommendation:

  • Graduate Record Examination scores
  • grade point average in previously completed graduate work
  • content of reference letters
  • compatibility of the degree program with your goals and needs
  • other evidence of advanced graduate academic skills (writing, research, etc)
  • relevant career or life experiences/accomplishments

How to Apply

Submit Materials

As part of the application process, you will need to submit a professional portfolio of the following items on TK20 for review by the Department of Educational Leadership. Please contact the Department and the TK20 link will be sent to you:

  • platform statement of educational philosophy and beliefs about leadership (no more than 600 words). You are encouraged to tweak such a document from your coursework if appropriate (such as assigned in EDAD 600 Introduction to Leadership course at Ball State University)
  • writing sample from a graduate course that reflects your best research writing (with citations and APA 6th formatting)
  • a current curriculum vitae that highlights leadership and community involvement.
  • names and email addresses of five references who have knowledge of your leadership abilities (we will contact them directly)
  • one copy of all college/university transcripts

We will review and evaluate all of your materials after we receive them. Following this evaluation, we may invite you to campus for a personal interview.

Following the evaluation, the Department makes a recommendation to the dean of the Teachers College and the dean of the Graduate School, who make the final decision and notify the candidate.


After admission, the student must begin coursework within two years, and all requirements for the degree must be met within seven years from the date of the first course taken after admission to the doctoral program.
