Decision Point 1 Requirements

Introductory Course

Complete Introductory Course with C or Better:

  • ENG 150, Introduction to Secondary English Education, or EDSEC 150, Basic Concepts of Secondary Education.

We recommend that you enroll in ENG 150 because it is specifically tailored to English/Language Arts teaching majors.

You should take EDSEC 150 only in cases where scheduling conflicts prevent you from taking ENG 150.
We continue to accept EDSEC 150 as the introductory course towards the English/language arts teaching major.

Portfolio

Every student who pursues a program leading to a teaching license must complete a digital portfolio. The digital portfolio is a major source of information and assessment about the student's progress toward recommendation for a teaching license.

You begin your portfolio in EDSEC 150 or ENG 150, and your instructor will formally assess your portfolio during this initial course.

During your course of study, there are four decision points (evaluations) to check on your progress in meeting requirements necessary for you to remain in the program and be eligible for graduation and licensing.

For help with your portfolio, contact Penny Craig, digital portfolio support manager.

Disposition Assessment

The attitudes and values shown by teachers are important indicators of success. At DP1, assessment takes place in EDSEC 150 or ENG 150.
