Graduate Student Advisory Board

The Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) is a group of elected graduate students from each of the seven areas of English study. All English graduate students are members of GSAB and can participate in many ways.

GSAB serves as a liaison between graduate students and faculty and as peer support for students. We are dedicated to the advancement of professional development, scholarship, and fellowship.

If you have an idea on how to improve the lives of English graduate students, we are the go-to group to voice your opinions, develop professionally, or bring up an issue about a particular course or policy.

In addition to our role as student representatives, we organize events and activities and look for ways to welcome new students into our community. Our main event, Practical Criticism Midwest, is a student-run conference that takes place during the spring semester.

The GSAB also:

  • provides financial assistance for students presenting at conferences and runs fundraisers
  • organizes professional development events to help graduate students who wish to present at conferences, prepare their curricula vitae, and many other topics
  • appoints grad student representatives to English department committees
  • puts on social events to encourage and enhance a cohesive community within the Department of English
  • provides guidance to potential and new graduate students
  • hosts regular meetings that can be a forum for student concerns
