Associate Professor of English
As a former middle/high school English teacher, I situate my research within teaching and learning. Broadly, I am interested in writing instruction and ways that teachers understand, design, and plan instruction for writing tasks. My current work investigates the ways teachers plan lessons and provide writing instruction for tasks that are cognitively demanding (e.g., tasks that ask students to do more than summarize; such tasks might include analysis, evaluation, or synthesis of complex ideas). I’m also especially interested in the ways that teachers help students learn to write about literature.
As a researcher, I look for opportunities to work with teachers to investigate challenges of teaching in order to help both pre-service and practicing teachers do their best work in classrooms.
