Darolyn "Lyn" Jones
Assistant Professor of English
I am both a teacher and a writer. I am passionate about literacy in and out of the classroom and have committed twenty-five years of my professional life to it.
I am the author of the popular educational book, Painless Reading Comprehension, co-author of Memory Workshop, editor of the literary online magazine titled, Rethinking Children’s and Young Adult Literature, editor for the popular children’s book series, the Neon TikiTribe, editor for an independent press, INwords Publications, a peer reviewer for English Journal, and the editor of eight different public memoir anthologies including: Sitting at the Feet Our Elders: Flanner House Speaks, five volumes of I Remember: Indianapolis Youth Write About Their Lives, Monday Coffee and Other Stories of Mothering Children with Special Needs, Stomping Ground, and Where Mercy and Truth Meet: Homeless Women of Wheeler Speak.
My work as a researcher in disability studies and community writing education has appeared in a variety of academic publications and includes some of the following titles: The Joyful Experiences of Mothers of Children with Special Needs: An Autoethnographic Study, “A Case Study of Radical Adult Education and Transformative Learning through a Diverse Adult Learning Workshop,” “The Pre-enrollment Considerations of Undergraduate Wheelchair Users and their Post-enrollment Transitions” and “Writing Collaboratively: Priority, Practice, and Process.
My work has been recognized by Purdue University, Jennings County School Corporation, Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation, Indiana University, and Ball State University where I have won several awards and recognitions including Teacher of the Year, the university-wide Excellence in Teaching Award, the Accessible Faculty Member of the Year Award, the leading research presentation at the Diversity and Inclusivity Teaching and Research Symposium, and the Top Diversity Research Publication and Presentation award two years in a row.
My work and ideas have been featured in the Indianapolis Star, at the Indianapolis Arts Center’s Spirit and Place festival, in the literary journal Wordgathering, in the Geeky Press’ Word Jam, Her magazine, Parents magazine, on the Best Buddies international website, and in Autism Digest.
I currently serve as a contract faculty assistant professor in the Department of English at Ball State University and as the Education Outreach Director of the public Memoir Project at the Indiana Writers Center. I serve as an executive committee member for the Indiana Teachers of Writing (ITW), as a faculty mentor for students with disabilities on campus, and as the campus sponsor for the Alliance of Black and Latino Teachers Club.
I taught English and German and was a department chair and professional development leader in the K-12 system for 12 years before becoming a literacy consultant and instructional coach, director for a nonprofit, writer, and professor.
Areas of Specialization: secondary English education, disability research and studies, adult education, reading comprehension, creative narrative nonfiction, editing and publishing, multiculturalism, and community literacy
