GIS KNOWLEDGE GROUP
The Geography department has sponsored the creation of the
GIS Knowledge Group at Ball State. The GISKG is an interdisciplinary group of
faculty, staff, and students whose activities involve geographic information
systems or GIS. Current members span the sciences and humanities and anyone
with interest in GIS is welcome. For more information please contact Steven Radil or follow our blog
at GIS Knowledge Group.
GIS IMMERSIVE LEARNING PROJECT PAYING LOCAL DIVIDENDS:
Ball State Geography graduate student Zaine
Venter has introduced a series of free mapping workshops for neighborhood
associations and other local organizations. The first workshop was held October 5th at the Muncie Public Library and introduced participants to the
basics of Google Earth, a free mapping program. Upcoming workshops will focus
on finding and using existing map information, like census-based demographic
data (Oct. 12), and how to share interactive maps online (Oct. 19). The
workshops are part of a larger Immersive Learning project called "A
people's atlas of Muncie" that explores the role of geographic technology
for local political decision making. For more information contact Zaine Venter or Steven Radil or follow the project at Peoples Atlas of Muncie.
Please congratulate these students for receiving the following awards and scholarships:

David L. Odom Award for Outstanding Service in Meteorology and Climatology:
Congratulations... and job well done!
GEOGRAPHERS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS:
Kacie Shourd and Aj Wardle, two of our undergraduates in Option 4 (Meteorology and Climatology, Professional Track) have been awarded prestigious Hollings Scholarships by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Awardees of these scholarships receive academic assistance for two years, plus a paid ten week intership at a NOAA facility during the summer between their first and second years.
To have not one, but TWO of our students win these scholarships is a statement about the geography program in general, specifically the meteorology/climatology program.
Once again, congratulations to Kacie and Aj!
