Carol Hummel Shears joined the Ball State geography department faculty in 1982. She is the faculty advisor to the GEOG 101 Laboratory Teaching Assistants and has, in the past, been the faculty advisor for Gamma Theta Upsilon. She has worked with the National Geographic Bee on the state level since its inception. She has also been an active member of Geography Educators Network of Indiana (GENI), and has served as a member of GENI's board. She is also involved with BSU Teachers College Faculty Class I, Freshman Connection, University Core Curriculum, and is the Secretary of the University Financial Aid Committee. She is the editor of Laboratory Exercises in Applied Physical Geography and Earth Science, the laboratory book used in all sections of GEOG 101. She specializes in physical geography, U.S. landscapes, teacher education, pedagogy, and Indiana. Her research interests include curriculum development and methods of learning. She earned her MA, MAE from Ball State University in 1982.
