To our students, prospective students, alumni, and friends:

Thank you for your interest in the Department of History at Ball State University. We believe that our department, and its students and faculty, are engaged in important work in teaching, research, and service.

The history department functions as an anchor of the University Core Curriculum (UCC) and is also a leader in the teacher education program at Ball State. Our faculty also participate actively in the other teaching and research programs at the university, including the Honors College, the Center for Middletown Studies, and the Women's and Gender Studies Program. We also collaborate in programs specializing in ancient studies.

Each year, our history graduates leave Ball State to begin exciting new careers in teaching and public history or they enter some of the most prestigious graduate programs throughout the United States. Members of our faculty continue to distinguish themselves as scholars, with their books and articles being published regularly by the outstanding professional journals and academic publishers in the United States and abroad.

Feel free to explore our Web site and visit us in person anytime. Our offices are in the historic Burkhardt Building, named after our former colleague, Richard W. Burkhardt, provost emeritus and professor emeritus of history.

Kevin Smith, Ph.D.
Chairperson of the Department of History
