Whitinger Scholars Program

The Whitinger Scholarship is the signature scholarship of the Honors College and is the most prestigious scholarship awarded by Ball State University. Established in 1976, the scholarship is supported by academic programs, social activities, and special opportunities as well as the funds for the scholarship itself.

The Whitinger Scholars Program honors 10 unusually talented students each year. The award covers full tuition/fees and room and board and is renewable for a total of eight semesters, subject to annual review.

Scholarship recipients are selected by committee based on their academic ability, character, creativity, and potential for leadership. Whitinger Scholars may pursue any Ball State major. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  • First-time Honors College freshman, fall semester
  • At least a 3.70 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale in academic college preparatory courses (academic GPA as calculated by Ball State’s Office of Admissions)
  • Minimum SAT composite score of 1950, including a minimum of 600 on each of the three sub-scores: critical reading, math, and writing; or a minimum ACT composite of 29, including a minimum of 26 on the ACT math, English, and writing subscores

Honors College applicants who qualify for the award will be sent application materials upon completion of their application to Ball State. Requirements include returning the written application, an on-campus conversation with the director of the program or a representative of the committee, and a spontaneous essay.

Students must be admitted to Ball State and the Honors College before an application for the scholarship can be considered; early application to the university is strongly advised, since the admissions process can take several weeks, and applications for the scholarship are not sent until that process is complete.

All applicants are personally responsible for submitting their completed applications to the director of the program by the mid-January deadline. Specific information is on the application form. Self-nominations or applications or nominations from schools are not accepted. Finalists will be notified on or before January 31 to schedule an on-campus visit. All interviews must be completed by March 1.
