Career Opportunities for Journalism Majors

Just check out our majors, and it's easy to see how many career opportunities are open to those with a degree from our department. Here are a few of the possibilities:

Advertising—Be an advertising major, and you might land a job as a copywriter, art director, account executive, account coordinator, traffic coordinator, print production assistant, assistant broadcast producer, media planner, media buyer, research project coordinator, advertising manager, corporate communications assistance, or advertising sales representative. Ball State advertising graduates can be found in such prominent agencies as Bates Worldwide, JWT (formerly J. Walter Thompson), Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson, Ogilvy & Mather, and TBWA\Chiat\Day.

Journalism Graphics—Choose journalism graphics, and you might become a newspaper page designer, a graphics reporter, a magazine page designer, or an art director, to name a few possibilities. Graduates can be found in such prominent places as The Washington Post, The Village Voice, the Detroit Free Press, The Baltimore Sun, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Associated Press.

Magazine—This major can lead to careers in magazine reporting, editing, and management. Ball State graduates can be found at such publications as Sports Illustrated, Endless Vacation, Poets & Writers, Indianapolis Monthly, and Kiwanis Magazine.

News—A long list of career possibilities opens when you select this major, from news and sports reporting to copy editing to feature writing to various editor and management positions at all levels. Our graduates can be found at fine publications across the country, including USA Today, Dow Jones Online, the Chicago Tribune, The Denver Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Associated Press.

Photojournalism—As a photojournalism graduate, you might work as a photographer or a photo editor at a newspaper or news organization, industrial or trade publication, public organization, or even your own photography businesses. Our graduates can be found all over, including the Chicago Tribune, The (Fort Wayne, Indiana) Journal Gazette, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Public Relations—Our graduates are prepared to serve in a wide range of capacities, at organizations ranging from PR firms to corporations, trade associations, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government agencies. Some of our graduates work in such places as Fleischman-Hillard, Ketchum, Walt Disney World, the U.S. House of Representatives, and Donna Karen.

Secondary Education—Our graduates are also making a difference in the lives of future journalists, serving as journalism instructors as well as publication advisors at the high school and junior high levels.
