Swingley was division director of marketing for Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana; assistant director of PR for Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie; publications editor for St. John’s Hospital in Anderson, Indiana; high school publications adviser and journalism teacher at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis; and adjunct professor at Anderson University

Research/Creative/Publication Interests:
Swingley’s research is in information gathering (media literacy, finding resources, document research, interviewing), public relations (media relations, campaigns, crisis communication, writing) along with gender issues in the mass media, fundraising and development, internships/professional development and sustainability. From 2005 through 2017, Swingley represented the College of Communication, Information, and Media on Ball State’s Council on the Environment.

Research/Creative/Publication Career Highlights:
Swingley has created and implemented new courses at the university, including philanthropy in America and volunteerism, gender issues in the mass media, information gathering and science writing. She has served as the mentor for a number of immersive learning opportunities in the areas of economics, food, international tourism and disaster coverage and preparedness. She developed a professional development seminar, enabling students to have stronger résumés and cover letters for their internships and career entry. Swingley served as the internship coordinator for the Department of Journalism for more than 22 years, supervising and mentoring nearly 3,200 interns.

Thesis/Creative Project Experience and Philosophy:
Swingley has served as a member of graduate thesis committees. She has advised a number of undergraduate thesis papers.
