Math2 175

One of the requirements that teaching majors in mathematics must satisfy in order to pass through Decision Point 2 is to prepare and give a 10-15 minute presentation about a topic from elementary calculus.  Students may give a calculus presentation during the term in which they are enrolled in MATH 166 or after completing MATH 166 (Calculus II or its equivalent).  Specific dates and times when a calculus presentation can be scheduled will be posted here when available or in the Department of Mathematical Sciences office, Robert Bell Building (RB), room 465.  The purpose of the calculus presentation is for students to demonstrate aspects of their mathematical understanding and their written and oral communication skills.

Deadlines for submission of registration forms are September 28 for fall term presentations and February 15 for spring term presentations.  The completed forms should be returned to the Department of Mathematical Sciences Office (RB 465).

Two faculty members from the Department of Mathematical Sciences will attend the calculus presentation and use a rubric to assess the student's communication skills and mathematical content knowledge.  The notes and artifacts from the presentation will be included in student's teaching portfolio, as well as the evaluation and feedback given by the faculty committee.

    1)  Choose a topic

    2)  Schedule your presentation

    3)  Prepare and give your presentation

The faculty committee will use a 4-level rubric to evaluate the calculus presentations.  Each faculty committee member will use the rubric to rate components of the presentation and will give an overall rating.  The ratings from each of the three faculty committee members will be compiled and presented to students as a single report.
