Notable Projects

Dr. Philip Coelho received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This grant will support his summer research between 2007 and 2010. His project is to examine the impact that parasitic diseases had on the economic productivity of ethnic populations in the early 20th-century South, a time and place in which productivity was inherently linked to human labor. The study will focus on the geographic distinctiveness of diseases and differential biological susceptibilities to particular diseases of African-Americans (blacks) and European-Americans (whites) in the early 20th-century South, the earliest era for which explicit scientific knowledge of the diseases of interest exists.

Cecil Bohanon
and Norman Van Cott received a Provost’s Immersive Learning Initiative Grant for their project, A Socratic Student-Community Colloquium in Economics.

This 1 credit-hour intensive colloquium, a new learning opportunity for economics, social science, and business students, is a partnership of the E.B. and Bertha C. Ball Center and the Department of Economics.

The foundation of the colloquium is reading and discussing a classic or contemporary economics text of greater intellectual substance and focus than the typical undergraduate textbook. Examples of such a text might be selected readings from Adam Smith’s 1776 Wealth of Nations or Harvard economist Robert Barro’s 2002 Nothing Is Sacred: Economic Ideas for the New Millennium.

In addition to undergraduate students, the E.B. and Bertha C. Ball Center is inviting members of the Muncie and east central Indiana business and professional community to participate. Although not subject to course requirements, community members must follow the same rules of discussion as the students.

The target size of the colloquium is 10 students and five community members, plus facilitating faculty.
