Academic Qualifications Policy

Under guidelines from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) , the faculty is to have and maintain intellectual qualifications and current expertise to accomplish the school’s mission. All faculty members are to be qualified academically or professionally. Faculty members with doctorates who typically hold tenure-line positions are evaluated against the academic qualification standards. Faculty members who fill contract or adjunct positions are generally qualified by professional experience. This policy is concerned with academically qualified faculty and the intellectual contributions necessary to maintain that qualification.

It is important to understand the specific mission of Miller College in the scope of possible intellectual contributions. AACSB has defined three areas of intellectual contributions: (1) learning and pedagogical research; (2) contributions to practice, and (3) discipline-based scholarship. Based upon the Miller College mission, most of the efforts of faculty will fall (and for that matter have fallen) in the area of discipline-based scholarship as currently defined. This does not preclude faculty members from making intellectual contributions in the areas of learning and pedagogy and contributions to practice.

To be academically qualified, Miller College of Business faculty members must produce the equivalent of seven intellectual contributions (ICs) over a five year period. At least two of the seven must be peer reviewed journal articles in the faculty member’s discipline. The remaining intellectual contributions may be either journal articles or other ICs. Each journal article beyond the minimum requirement of two is equivalent to two other ICs. The acceptability of all intellectual contributions and the determination of an individual faculty member’s academic qualification will be determined by each department. All decisions made by departments will be reviewed by the chairs and the dean.

Academic qualifications will be determined each spring semester based on faculty annual reports. Effective January 1, 2011, for the purpose of determining academic qualification status, the acceptance date of an article will be considered relevant. Each department may evolve necessary procedures to periodically inform faculty members of their progress towards maintaining academic qualification status. The normal teaching load for academically qualified faculty is 3-3. If it is determined that a particular faculty member is not academically qualified, that faculty member will be placed on a 4-4 teaching load for the next academic year. Faculty members who are not academically qualified will not be eligible for summer teaching unless there is a documented student demand and there is no academically qualified faculty member willing or qualified to teach the course. Faculty members who are not academically qualified will not be eligible for an assigned graduate assistant.
