If you major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, you will take a proficiency test during either semester of your senior year to assess your skills in six areas: reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and culture.

Seniors with majors in classical languages will be expected to take a proficiency test to assess skills in three areas: translation, grammar, and culture. Exceptions will be granted only with the permission of the department chairperson.

Resulting scores are available to faculty members for assessing programmatic goals. The modern language test is based on content, procedures, and norms published by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and by the Educational Testing Services.
