Dr. Kim began her musical studies in her native Seoul, Korea at the famed Sunwha Art School. She graduated with the BM degree in Piano Performance, with honors, from Chung-Ang University. She continued her training as a scholarship student at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Performance Diploma) in Toronto. Dr. Kim completed the Artist Diploma in Collaborative Studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Doctor of Arts (DA) degree in Chamber Music/Accompanying at Ball State University.
Her principal piano teachers have included Suk Kim, Young-Ja Choi, Chi-Ho Cho, Marietta Orlov, James Anagnoson, Anita Pontremoli, and Robert Palmer. She was a winner of the 1980 Sam-Ick Piano Competition in Seoul, Korea, and performed with the Symphony Orchestra of Incheon in 1989. She was also a winner of the Ball State University Graduate Solo competition and performed with the BSU orchestra in 2004. Dr. Kim attended the International Sommerakademic Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Sophia is a founding member of Trio Cantabile and is currently a staff accompanist in the School of Music at Ball State University.
