JOEL BRAUN is Associate Professor of Music (Double Bass) at Ball State University (BSU). As an orchestral musician, he has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras. He currently serves as assistant principal bass with the Eastern Music Festival and as section bass with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. He regularly performs as a substitute musician with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his appointment at BSU, Joel performed extensively with the New York Philharmonic, accompanying the orchestra on their historic 2008 trip to North Korea and on numerous international tours of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. He has performed additionally with the Israel Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet Orchestra, and as guest principal bass with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Joel has given recent recitals at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Michigan State University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He has collaborated with nationally recognized musicians such as violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and pianist Awadagin Pratt, as well as members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Eastern Festival Orchestra. He is a frequent collaborator with the members of the American Piano Trio and can be heard regularly in solo and chamber performances at Ball State University and throughout the mid-west.

As an educator, Joel has presented recent master classes at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Michigan State University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Oregon, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. He has held faculty positions at The Juilliard School Pre-College Division, New York City's Special Music School at the Kaufman Center, the Benefic Chamber Music Camp, the Music For All National Festival, and the Music For All Summer Symposium. During the summer, he can be found teaching at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC.

Joel has published articles on bass pedagogy in the International Society of Bassists (ISB) professional journal “Bass World” and has given presentations on teaching and pedagogy at the 2015 ISB convention at Colorado State University and at the 2016 American String Teachers Association in Tampa, FL. Former students can be found playing in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Symphony in C, the American Youth Symphony, and have continued their studies at such institutions as The Juilliard School, Rice University, the Colburn School, Boston University, and UCLA, among many others.

Joel received a Pre-College Diploma, his B.M. and his M.M. degrees from The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Eugene Levinson.
