A teaching internship and externship are required of all doctoral students in the Ball State School of Music. At least 3 hours of credit must be earned for each experience; a total of 6 hours of credit may be earned with committee approval.
Internship in College Teaching (MUSCH 710)
This course involves guided teaching of Ball State undergraduate students under the supervision of a master teacher and surveys objectives, teaching approaches, and evaluative techniques appropriate to music teaching in the university. During enrollment, interns are convened at scheduled intervals for seminar activities. Studio and/or classroom observations and assigned readings on such topics as teaching approaches, testing procedures, and assessment round out the interns' activities.
Externship in College Teaching (MUSCH 711)
This course involves guided teaching of undergraduate students in a campus environment contrasting in size with Ball State and surveys objectives, teaching approaches, and evaluative techniques appropriate to music teaching in the smaller university, college, and junior or community college. A cooperative arrangement between a Ball State senior professor and a faculty member at the host institution provides guidance and supervision for the teaching experience.
