Available areas and duties

Graduate assistantships are regularly assigned in the areas below. Please check with the graduate coordinator on anticipated openings for the next academic year. The following list includes the available areas and duties;

  • Music History Teach music appreciation; administrative/research assistant to music history area. Learn more about music history assistantships.
  • Music Education From the following: Teach undergraduate music methods class; teach basic music for classroom teachers; supervise student teachers; research assistant to music education area.
  • Music Theory/Composition/Technology From the following: Teach ear-training/sight-singing labs; teach minor composition lessons; provide administrative support to theory/composition area; assist with recording concerts and recitals; manage computer lab; teach/assist in music technology program.
  • Voice, Opera/Musical Theatre From the following: Teach minor applied voice; teach voice class for theatre majors; assist School of Music opera program; teach voice class.
  • Piano From the following: Applied studio teaching of piano minors; studio and recital accompanying; dance accompanying; teaching assistant for group piano classes.
  • University Bands From the following: Assist with marching band; administer band library; direct basketball pep band program, university concert band program. Obligations begin in mid-August.
  • Choral Activities From the following: Conduct Women's or Men's Glee Club; administrative assistant for the choral program, assist with undergraduate conducting classes.
  • University Singers From the following: Assistant director of show choir organization; provide accompaniments or direct student instrumental ensemble, as appropriate; administrative assistant to director.
    Orchestra Program From the following: Assistant conductor of Ball State Symphony Orchestra; administrative assistant or librarian for orchestra program; conduct East Central Indiana Youth Symphony.
  • Jazz Studies From the following: Perform with jazz ensemble; conduct third jazz band; administrative assistant for jazz program.
  • Flute From the following: Perform with Graduate Woodwind Quintet; coach undergraduate woodwind ensembles; teach minor applied flute; assist with the Flute Choir.
  • Bassoon From the following: Perform with Graduate Woodwind Quintet; assist with woodwind techniques classes; teach minor applied bassoon; coach undergraduate woodwind ensembles.
  • Clarinet From the following: Teach applied clarinet; perform with Graduate Woodwind Quintet.
  • Oboe From the following: Teach applied woodwinds; perform with Graduate Woodwind Quintet; assist with woodwind tech classes.
  • Saxophone From the following: Teach applied saxophone; coach saxophone quartets; assist with woodwind tech classes; participate in jazz program.
  • Trumpet Perform with Faculty Brass Quintet; coach brass ensembles; teach trumpet.
  • Trombone From the following: Teach trombone; perform with and/or lead brass ensemble; coach brass ensembles; assist jazz studies area.
  • Percussion From the following: Teach percussion; perform with and/or lead percussion ensemble; administrative assistant for percussion program.
  • Guitar From the following: Teach guitar; perform with and/or lead guitar ensemble; administrative assistant for guitar program.
  • Harp Fm the following: Teach applied harp; assist with harp ensemble; assist harp area; provide teaching support to music education, music history, or music theory, as appropriate.
  • Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass From the following: Perform with Ball State Symphony Orchestra; small ensemble coaching; lead string sectional rehearsals; member of Graduate String Quartet; provide teaching support to music education, music history, or music theory, as needed. There are supplemental performance opportunities with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra (additional stipend) and orchestras of neighboring communities.

Additional Areas
Even though we may not anticipate an assistantship opening in your area, we nevertheless encourage you to apply for admission to the graduate program. Enterprising applicants often are able to secure assistantships outside the School of Music in such areas as the library, the university computer labs, and our various learning centers (see the Career Center).
