Admission Information

For admission into the Master of Music in Music Education program, follow the three steps below.

Admission to Ball State University Graduate Studies:

Admission to MM in Music Education

  • Send the following required materials to:

    Coordinator, Graduate Programs in Music

  • Information Sheet for Master’s Students in Music
    (included in application materials provided by Office of Graduate Programs in Music)
  • Professional Resume
  • A copy of your undergraduate transcript
  • A minimum of one Writing Sample
    This may be a formal paper from previous study, or a formal document related to your present music education position.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
    These should be from undergraduate music instructors and/or professional peers or administrators.
  • Professional Essay
    We are interested in your motivation for pursuing graduate study. In a well written essay, please respond to the following questions: 
    1. Why have you decided to pursue graduate study in music education? 
    2. Who influenced you the most with respect to your philosophy and approach to music education?

Admission Criteria

1. The applicant must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

2. The applicant must satisfy one of the following:

  • Undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the last two years of undergraduate work.
  • Show a 3.0 average in 9 semester hours of graduate work at Ball State approved by the
    chairperson of the major department and approved in advance by the Graduate Dean and a score on the Graduate Record Exam acceptable to the academic unit in which the student intends to major. Such students will be considered non-degree students until the conditions of their admission have been met.

3. Ordinarily, the applicant will have majored or minored in music at the undergraduate level.

4. Minimum of two years of K-12 music teaching experience.
