Jazz Concentration

The Jazz Concentration with an entrepreneurial focus is the newest performance concentration offered in the School of Music. Students study with full-time jazz professors who possess a wealth of experience as performers and teachers. Faculty provides students with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive musical world.

All students receive weekly private lessons and significant performing experience in our jazz ensembles and combos. In addition, students participate in workshops and master classes with world-renowned jazz artists. Previous guest artists include Buddy DeFranco, Wycliffe Gordon, Mike Clark, Byron Stripling, and Bobby Watson to name a few. The Jazz Lab Ensemble, our flagship ensemble, performs six concerts a year and tours internationally every 3-4 years.

Students develop marketing, business, and publicity skills and take classes in jazz theory, composition, arranging, improvisation, pedagogy, and history. Required and self-produced senior recording projects take place in our state-of-the-art music media production studios, and students present full-length recitals in our leading-edge performance venues. The performance-rich environment at Ball State also provides students with numerous opportunities to hear concerts given by faculty, visiting artists, and resident ensembles.
