The music education program at Ball State is one of the leading music teacher-training programs in the nation. You will pursue a fully accredited curriculum leading to an Indiana K-12 teaching license in instrumental and general or vocal and general music. We emphasize the development of musical knowledge and skills within immersive learning and field-based training. Significant observation and teaching opportunities in Pre-K-12 classrooms begin the first semester of your freshman year and extend throughout the eight-semester sequence.
You will actively participate in teaching situations both inside and outside the university classroom every semester of your four-year program, providing extensive opportunities for authentic assessment.
Our music media production (MMP) program is where recording engineering, music business, professional songwriting, and more come together. Our emphasis is on creativity, hands-on experience, and a thorough grounding in the scientific and theoretical aspects of sound as well as the music business, enabling our music media production degree to prepare graduates for a number of career possibilities.
This degree is academically and artistically rigorous and challenging. Potential students should have a strong background in music.
A performance degree offers intensive and thorough training under the tutelage of faculty who possess a wealth of experience as performers and teachers. Our goal is to provide you with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive musical world.
All students receive weekly private lessons. Students also receive significant performing experience in the orchestral, choral, wind, and chamber music repertoire through participation in award-winning ensembles. Students can also schedule full-length recitals in a leading edge performance venue.
The Jazz Concentration with an entrepreneurial focus is the
newest performance concentration offered in the School of Music.
Our program provides students with an opportunity to study with internationally recognized composers working across a wide variety of styles and media. Degree options include instrumental/vocal composition and sonic arts technology. You will have the chance to pursue projects in collaboration with other departments on campus, including music for dramatic and documentary films, games, experimental videos, dance, and virtual environments.
