John W. Scheib is Director of the School of Music and Associate Professor of Music Education in the College of Fine Arts at Ball State University. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Scheib served the school as Associate Director (2008-2010), Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs (2006-2008), Primary Departmental Advisor (2006-2009), and as a member of the faculty teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in instrumental music education and research methodology (2002-2010). 

As a member of the school leadership team, Dr. Scheib led curricular revisions to all 17 undergraduate major and minor degree programs and over 100 courses, was instrumental in the development and implementation of a new core curriculum for all programs, guided the successful and complete reaccreditation of all programs through the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), co-authored the school’s strategic plan and NASM self-study, and facilitated the successful completion of numerous tenure-track, contract, and staff position searches within the School of Music. 

Dr. Scheib has also served on all four major University-level curriculum committees, including holding office on executive committees for both the Graduate Education Committee (chair and secretary) and Professional Education Committee (secretary), and College of Fine Arts representative on both the Undergraduate Education Committee and Undergraduate Core Curriculum subcommittee. He continues service to Ball State as an invited member of the University’s Strategic Planning Task Force for 2012-2017.

Dr. Scheib's research interests include the beliefs and practices of school music teachers, music teacher identity construction and related job (dis)satisfaction, music education reform, and student motivation. Articles authored by Dr. Scheib have appeared in the  Journal of Research in Music Education,  Update: Applications of Research in Music Education,  Journal of Music Teacher Education,  Arts Education Policy Review,  Music Educators Journal,  Teaching Music, and  Indiana Musicator. He is currently under contract for a chapter on theoretical frameworks for an upcoming Oxford University Press text on qualitative research in music education.  

Dr. Scheib has received numerous invitations to present sessions/papers at significant professional conferences, including the 59  th  -62  nd  biennial  Music Educators National Conference (MENC) National In-Service Conferences  (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010), the 1  st  -4  th biennial  Instrumental Music Teacher Educators (IMTE) National Symposia (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011), the 1  st  and 2  nd  biennial  Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE) National Symposia  (2005, 2007), and the  College Music Society (CMS) National Conference (2004). 

Dr. Scheib served on review committees for both the  60th MENC National Biennial Conference and the  2007 Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE) National Symposium on Music Teacher Education Conference Proceedings, editorial board of the  Music Educators Journal, and advisory board of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater College of Arts & Communication. He is currently a member of the Editorial Committee for the  Journal of Music Teacher Education. 

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Scheib holds music education degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (B.M.) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (M.M. & Ph.D.). Prior to his university-level work, Dr. Scheib taught instrumental music in the Wisconsin public schools for 9 years. He is listed in several  Who's Who publications, received the  Richard G. Gaarder Award by the Wisconsin Music Educators Association (WMEA), and received the  Outstanding Advisor Award from Ball State for his work with BSU's collegiate MENC chapter.
