Meryl Mantione (lyric mezzo-soprano), Professor of Voice, came to Ball State University in 2006 and served as Director of the School of Music from 2006-2010. She served as Director of the School of Music at Ohio University from 2002-2006. She was a Professor of Voice at the University of Oklahoma for twelve years, where she served as Chair of the Voice Department from 1991-2002 and as Assistant Director and Coordinator of Graduate Studies for the School of Music from 1997-2002. Prior to her faculty position at the University of Oklahoma, she taught on the music faculty of Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.M. in Voice Performance) and the University of Colorado, Boulder (M.M. and D.M.A. in Voice Performance), she studied with Lois Fisher and Barbara Kinsey Sable and has coached with a number of distinguished artists. An active performer, she has appeared as a guest soloist and recitalist throughout the United States and made her professional opera debut with the Inter-Mountain Opera Association in 1987. In 1992 Dr. Mantione was one of twelve voice teachers from across the U.S. chosen to participate in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Foundation Intern Program. She has been active in leadership positions in NATS, serving as the Oklahoma District Governor from 1999-2002. In 1993 she was a recipient of an Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma. Her students and former students have appeared in productions with Baltimore Opera, the Fort Worth Opera Touring program, national tours of productions including Cats and Spamalot, and the Santa Fe Opera. They have won scholarships to graduate schools and programs such as Peabody, Indiana University, Arizona State University, the University of Memphis, Southern Methodist University, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, and Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony; and have competed successfully in vocal competitions such as the NATS Artist Award Competition, the Orpheus Competition, and the Stewart Award Competition.
