About the Ensemble

The Concert Choir is a select ensemble open to students of all disciplines by audition. Over the course of several semesters of participation, members will perform accompanied and a cappella music representing a broad spectrum of history and cultures. The Concert Choir frequently performs with orchestra or other instrumental ensembles and occasionally tours the region as ambassadors of Ball State University.

In preparation for performance, Concert Choir works to advance music literacy skills, build vocal strength, accuracy, and flexibility, and connect our understanding of choral music to other disciplines and the greater context of history. Concert Choir members also form the core of our Statesmen and Women’s Chorus.

Membership in Concert Choir is generally a full-year commitment; however, auditions are held at the beginning of each semester. Members of the ensemble for fall semester do not need to reaudition for spring participation.

Audition Required

Concert Choir auditions take place each fall a few days before the semester starts. Please sign up to audition as soon as you are on campus—the earlier the better. There is a limited amount of audition slots available once classes begin.

To schedule an audition, please sign up on the choral bulletin board outside of MI 128 in the weeks preceding the fall semester.

Auditions will consist of:

  • vocal exercises
  • pitch memory
  • rhythm
  • accompanied sight-singing exercises

You may also be asked to sing a song that is familiar to you, such as “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” You do not need to bring a prepared piece.

Do you want to join the Concert Choir in the spring semester? To audition, contact the director prior to the November registration period.

Graduate Program in Conducting

Graduate study in choral conducting is available at the masters and doctoral levels. With abundant podium time leading our choral ensembles, our curriculum balances practical experiences with rigorous training in music history, analysis, and performance skills. Graduate students work closely with faculty to prepare for careers as professional musicians. For more information, please contact Andrew Crow.
