Admission Requirements and How to Apply

Master of Arts in Physical Education with a Coaching Specialization

Admission is a two-step process: 

  1. Apply and meet the admission requirements of the Ball State Graduate School.   

  2. Meet the following admission requirements of the Ball State School of Kinesiology:

      • Have an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a scale of 4.0.
      • Submit an approximately 1,000 word statement of purpose relating to the program's purposes and objectives.
      • Provide three letters of recommendation.
      • Submit a resume which includes all of your pertinent coaching experience.
      • You may be asked to complete a phone interview. 
      • If you are an international student, you will also need to meet admission requirements through by Ball State's Rinker Center for International Programs.
      • Although not requirements for admission, we would prefer candidates who meet the following criteria:
        • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education, physical education, biology, or other related major.
        • Have at least five years of coaching experience either as an assistant or head coach in an interscholastic, club, competitive, or structured sport venue by completion of the program.
        • Have completed sport-specific certifications (e.g., NFHS, ASEP, USATF).

Application Deadlines

The deadlines below are for having ALL application materials to Ball State.

  • October 1 for the spring semester
  • February 1 for summer semester
  • Cohorts are not accepted for the fall semester

Financial Aid
Funding help for graduate school, even part-time study, is not out of the question. You may be eligible to receive financial aid in the form of federal Stafford Loans (unsubsidized), private sources, military benefits, or employer assistance programs. We highly recommend you contact our Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for additional questions.

Students from Other States
If you live in a state other than Indiana, this information regarding state regulatory authorizations for distance programs might impact whether you can take courses from Ball State.
