Kevin McGill, J.D.

Adjunct Instructor

McGill earned his J.D. from the Massachusetts School of Law.

When Kevin McGill was 15, he began searching for a book on javelin throwing. From his home in New York, he hopped a train to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., where he found a copy of a javelin manual. Unfortunately, it was written in Norwegian. No problem. McGill ordered a copy and translated it into English.

He has coached and taught physical education at Columbia University, and he helped found the USATF’s (USA Track and Field) coaching education program. He also worked with athletes in Algeria to help establish a national track program.

In the early 1980s, he published Hammer Notes, a newsletter covering training methods, techniques, and advice from the foremost coaches in the world. He is the co-author of The Throws Manual: Shot, Discus, Hammer, Javelin, which is now in its 3rd edition. Vern Gambetta, an internationally recognized expert in training and conditioning who has consulted major league soccer and baseball teams, calls McGill “perhaps the world’s foremost authority on the throws.”

Today, McGill devotes his time to mentoring track and field coaches. He teaches ACE 688 Current Issues in Coaching Research.
