After graduating from Bates College, Dr. David W. Concepción received his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Concepción passionately serves to advance inclusive pedagogy, leading faculty workshops about diversity at Ball State University and around the county.

Dr. Concepción’s areas of specialization are teaching and learning, feminism, and ethics. Among others, he teaches Environmental Ethics, Feminist Ethics & Epistemology, and Contemporary Ethical Theory (including Metaethics). He also leads Stance: An International Undergraduate Philosophy Journal the Philosophy Program’s immersive learning course.

Dr. Concepción has received all four of BSU’s top teaching honors: “Lawhead Teaching Award,” “Excellence in Teaching Award,” “Outstanding Teaching Award” and “Immersive Learning Award.” Other recognitions include the discipline of philosophy’s only national award for research about teaching, the Mark Lenssen Prize, and the American Philosophical Association’s award for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs.

Recent publications include: “The State of Teacher Training in Philosophy," Teaching Philosophy, “Engaging Novices: Transparent Alignment, Flow, and Controlled Failure,” in Philosophy Through Teaching and “Overcoming Oppressive Self-Blame: Gray Agency in Underground Railroads,” Hypatia Vol. 24, No. 1, 81-99. He serves on the boards of Teaching Philosophy, College Teaching, and Studies in Pedagogy, is Past President of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, and is a member of the APA Committee on Teaching.
