The state of science education in the United States is at a critical stage. The advent of standards based testing has demonstrated that American students are underperforming most developed nations in a competitive world market. Universities play a critical role in this scenario. The need for university level science teacher educators to work at undergraduate teacher preparation institutions is growing as more K-12 schools and districts look for highly trained classroom science teachers. Likewise, university science educators also play a role in providing professional development opportunities and support for science teachers already in the classroom, often in the form of graduate degree programs specializing in advanced science teaching. Individuals who select this do dissertation research which emphasizes science teaching and learning.
